Hey there, this images fits the description of a ship I have in a story, may I have permission to use it in an article for a role playing game eZine?

I like it, it looks like the Emperor's Ship from the Scifi Miniseries rendition of Dune, i think it would make a great cruise ship for space flight, putting windows in the front had honestly not occurred to me but it is very practical. Its a good job!

i like the back end of the ship... but the front is a little bit bulky
but stil i think its kinda cowl and nice level of detail
how long did it take to render the whole thing?

To render it, 20 minutes or so, to make it.. much much longer than i ever wanted to spend on making it ;)

i think that if u make the front of the ship in the shape of a "northern pike" u would have a very nice vessel. but i guess u proberbly burned this project allready ^^

O.o A CYLINDER!! holy damn... you truly are an amazing sculptor

1. Dumb question, C4D 101... What is a mesh?

A mesh is all polygons of an object - but its not amazing sculpting, its extruding ;) When i model complex objects i usually don't do it this way, because its the laziest way of modeling there is and doesn't really work well for any kind of fancy shape

When i said one big mesh i mean the shape is connected - least till the first bulkhead

So front hull is one mesh, and mirrored at that ;p

<_< >_> I extrude alot >_> >_<

But originally you built it out of multiple objects, and then made it one mesh, right?

No, the front section except details is extruded and edited/shaped from 1 cylinder, all other hull sections are separate objects as well

There is no reason why i would connect the objects into 1 mesh ;) Would make editing them kinda hard ...

Basically - this ship consists of many thousands of objects - the FRONT section however, is 1 object and extruded from 1 object ,) Including the inlays and panels etc...

Once extruded i split the panels of the windows into a second object so that i can could texture them independently (and mirror that)

I use all kinds of editing techniques - for most of the stuff i edit faces (extrude, inner extrude) but some stuff is point edited welded or even "booled" ;p

I'm utterly and truely amazed... Sorry to be asking all these dumb question. I'm returning to C4D after a year long break, and even before that breaks I was still extremely noob...

There doesn't look to be any over lapping polygons anywhere on the ship, how do you get it to look like that?

I've actually got quite a few questions for you, i hope you don't mind :-p

1. Okay, first off, how did you make the front part of the hull/ nose? Did you make it from a single object or multiple?

2. Did you just make half of the ship, and then mirrored it?

I might have a couple more later, thank you very much in advance

1) The front was at first a cylinder ;p Apart from the details (top bridge and front stuff) its one big mesh ;) Basically i just extruded and for the windows split the mesh once it was done

2) Yes ;p

do you use a plugin of some sort for the repeating objects?

Just copy paste and arrays / instances - i model all stuff per hand but where possible i use mirrored instances

Seems plausible to me.

If I got a distress call from a passenger cruiser, jumped in to investigate, and saw this I'd assume it was either that or a freighter.

Remember, not all ships will be well constructed or well planned. Just like not all ocean liners, aircraft, cars, etc are well planned or constructed. Sometimes the most ubiquitous has a major flaw, but another extremely redeeming quality (often price, or speed/availability of manufacture). Think originla Volkswagen Beetle and it's extremely underpowered engine and lack of heater.

I sometimes get the same feeling, that's why I have a folder named "fucked up" that has like countless ship models in it.
Btw that gives me an idea, I think I'm going to do a ship-collection from all the WIPs and messed up designs that didn't get to see the light, might be cool and something other 3D peeps can relate to :D

Hah.. yeah | Whenever i do stuff without a concept in mind i have a 50/50 chance to completely mess up .. for some reason with spaceships especially because.. well they are big and you CAN model yourself into a dead-end where deleting everything is a choice suddenly

Also i still haven't found a decent way to do engines , engines and bridge are the main problems, how do model an spaceship engine.. the world seriously needs a tutorial like that!

Engines are all dependant on the method of propulsion. o: Pick a method, then look up how other people have used it. :3
