Dacorum Space Exploration Vessel by eRe4s3r Dacorum Space Exploration Vessel by eRe4s3r
So finally its done, took long enough..

Not really sure i feel like a scene for this.. figured I might as well present the ship properly regardless

Made with Cinema 4D , contrast/brightness/sharpness tuning in photoshop
Too many polygons ;p

For some more description regarding the ship...
---------------------------------------------
This Vessel is a pure space vessel. No landing on planets or some such nonsense. For that it has 6 shuttles with guns ;p

Bridge is in the core section (the middle of the whole thing) and has no solid connection in any way to the outside or ship hull - Bridge core floats in shock dampening gel and is spherical, supports full surface visualization for 360° view around the ship from inside the ship. Once sealed no crew can enter or exit the core until seal is broken. Core Gel can also harden in the event of a hit or boarding attempt. Bridge core can be used as escape pod.

For long range flight all crew enters stasis - important crew stasis pods are inside the bridge core assembly. For "unimportant" crew the stasis pods are in the gravitational torus

in dynamic flight mode ship uses 2 acceleration thrusters and 2 breaking thrusters for optimal maneuver performance.

2 Docking ports (left and right side, apr 12m in front of the breaking nozzle) require extension tunnel to connect with other ships and stations

---------------------------------------------

Comments and Criticism welcome.

Very nice, there's a good blend of the chunky kind of design like B5 but the curves soften it up without looking out of place. Great work.

183x65x51 meters is, IMO, too small space to contain SIX! corvettes or shuttles.

Sorry: SIX! corvette/shuttle hybrids. How long these units are, anyway?

Cool design. -the shapes flow together excellently. I especially like where the elliptical section meets the hull.

I just love something about all your work. I think it's either the texture or shading just looks really nice and crisp.

Wow! I would would really like to know how you did the textures! I love them! as well as the whole concept! It's great! Can you please tell me what method you are using??
Thank you so much!

Method.. mhh ~.~

In this its primarily procedural shaders (tiles and such) probably 1 even from an additional plugin.. i rendered that to 2k x 2k then edited it in photoshop, created normal maps/dirt maps/specular and used that.

Nothing particularly great or unique about these textures ;p They just serve their purpose

Hah, only few are.. games usually have little use for rendered images of high poly things - but besides that, yeah, some of my models are in a game, called Star Ruler, but low-poly and very INDY indeed ;p

I wouldn't say they look professional, but at least not terrible ;) For professional i really ought to texture something large and pretty properly, but for these ships its just 1 or 2 half-procedural textures.

And I was thinking of doing that here, its just... I hadn't really any plan for this model besides finishing it up, and doing textures takes forever ;/

Yeah.. well i am glad some like it, but from a technical point of view it is really "dirty" .. things are just slapped on it instead of incorporated into the design because i was revising it like mid-way in and then had no idea how to continue in places. This ship did not flow easily from conception to final.. not at all.

You would know, having designed it, but I t does not appear "dirty" to me. It looks purposeful and industrial, like it's built by people who know what works.

Holy crap that is a nice model I love the attention to detail with the little ships great evenly spaces level of detail I also like how much thought you put into the concept of this thing. Its outstanding. I would love to see some detail on the interior especially that core how does the crew reach the docking ports if they are sealed in the bridge? Also I'm working on a smaller 3 man space fighter of my own and would love some notes on how the thrusters and steering work I'm having trouble finding reference online seeing as military space vehicles are mostly a sci fi thing and most sci fi artist are content with it has glowing things that make it move however it wants.

Docking ports are only for entering exiting when the bridge is not sealed. And its only really supposed to seal for the duration of combat or dangerous situations.

If you want to know how RCS works i'd advise playing Orbiter, it explains really well what directional ability you want to control rotation in space, which is the most important thing to have control off in space ;P

Very nice, a solid-looking design with a good write-up, especially the buried bridge (though I don't see why it would need the gel shock absorber - at 32k+ tons, any hit powerful enough to provide enough sudden inertial stress to require such measures would probably rip the ship in half in the process). One question though - if it uses 2 acceleration thrusters, how come the in-picture quote is for 8 acceleration thrusters & there are 3 visible (& from the shape of the hull, presumably a fourth hidden) thrust trails? Are the additional engines purely used for long range flight?

Ps.: The lore stuff with the bridge in that gel is mainly for FTL purposes, but as I didn't want to clone Mass Effect cores or any such stuff I left it out ;)

For obvious logic reasons a spaceship only makes sense with FTL or at least deterministic flight ability anyway

And finally - the bridge core stabilization is mainly to save space, all the rest of the ship has no shock absorption whatsoever, so it shakes when any of these HUGE rcs thrusters fires. And you don't want your bridge to shake - thats the whole point of captains luxury after all ;P

There are 6 main thrusters in that arrangement where the trails are, and 1 additional smaller thruster at the back of each of the arms (its in the same location where the RCS thrusters are). Perspective just hides those very very well indeed

But you are of course right, in this shot I figured doing all 8 trails would be overkill so i only did 6 (the perspective hides the other 3 unintentionally perfectly ;p)

As for the lore, for normal travel only 6 thrusters would be used. The 2 on the arms are only when speed matters. I always thought it'd be really silly to have a ship with guns that has to turn around to brake so thats why the 2 front / 2 back flight mode is there, for when you really need to move around and not just thrust forward
