This is why I have to render cel shading in Post and lay it over in photoshop then put a layermask over it and delete it where it doesn't work right.. because cinema 4D has physical light effects that I use as engine effect, but physical effects are part of the scene (are reflected and everything) while cel shading is not. Cel shading is a post effect so glow is applied above it, but volume lights below it.. oh well

Anyway, this is how it looks when you apply Linear Workflow + Negative contrast -25% AO on a basic texture.... I actually kinda like this effect, it gives no hard contrasts but instead you can see everything, yet AO is still there, and works fine thanks to linear workflow.

The same scene without linear workflow would look so dark you could hardly tell what is what, while bright areas would overglow, ie, while light comes from top right you couldn't see what is in the shadows unless you boosted GI way higher than 100%, or somehow reduce shadow brightness... point being, it is kinda tricky to make a spacescene with linear workflow, but it can pay off to mess around with it to get unique shadings.

What about particles,do you have decent particle system which you can set up a basic thrust FX ?
